A working system beats a brilliant plan
A modest automation running in production on Tuesday is worth more than an excellent roadmap that nobody executes. We optimise for things that exist.
About
AI Consultant Kenya is a Nairobi-based consultancy for organisations that want artificial intelligence to do actual work — not to appear in a strategy document. We are small, senior, independent, and uncomfortably direct about what will and will not pay off.
Who is AI Consultant Kenya?
AI Consultant Kenya is an independent artificial intelligence and automation consultancy based in Nairobi, working with businesses and organisations across Kenya and East Africa. We provide AI strategy, workflow automation, AI agent development, custom AI engineering, corporate training and data readiness work — taking projects from first conversation through to systems running in production, with the client owning the code and the accounts throughout.
We started this practice because of a pattern that kept repeating. A Kenyan business would hear that AI was important, spend real money on a strategy document or a licence, and end up eighteen months later with nothing running and a quiet reluctance to try again. The technology was almost never the reason. The reason was that nobody had connected the clever part to the actual, messy, WhatsApp-and-Excel way the business really worked.
So we built the practice around that gap. We spend our time in the places consultants usually skip: the loading bay where invoices are photographed, the finance office at month end, the WhatsApp group where approvals really happen. Then we build something that fits the business as it is rather than as the org chart describes it.
We are part of Radahost, a Kenyan hosting and infrastructure company that has been keeping other people’s systems running for years. That parentage is more useful than it sounds: it means the things that quietly sink AI projects — uptime, backups, domains, email deliverability, someone reachable when a server misbehaves at 22:00 — are handled by people who do that for a living, rather than improvised by a consultancy that would rather be building models.
We are not the cheapest option in Nairobi, and we are not trying to be the biggest. We are trying to be the firm you would recommend to someone you like.

What we believe
These are not values on a wall. They change what we quote, what we build and what we refuse.
A modest automation running in production on Tuesday is worth more than an excellent roadmap that nobody executes. We optimise for things that exist.
Before you can automate a process you have to understand it, and understanding it often reveals that the real fix is simpler and cheaper than AI. We will tell you when that is the case.
Machines should remove typing, not judgement. Anything that moves money, makes a promise or affects somebody’s livelihood needs a person who is answerable for it.
You get the code, the credentials and the documentation. A consultant who makes themselves indispensable has confused a hostage situation with a relationship.
M-Pesa, WhatsApp, patchy bandwidth, KRA eTIMS, the Data Protection Act. Advice that treats these as edge cases was written for somewhere else.
That the data is not ready. That the timeline is fantasy. That nobody internally owns this. Saying it in week one is a service; saying it in month six is an excuse.
How we compare
An honest comparison, including the cases where we are not the right choice.
| Us | Global consulting firm | Software vendor | Freelancer | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Builds the system | Yes, in production | Sometimes, via a delivery arm | Their product only | Yes |
| Independent of vendors | Yes, no commissions | Usually has partnerships | No, by definition | Varies |
| Kenya-specific design | Core to how we build | Often adapted from elsewhere | Rarely | Varies |
| You own the code | Always, from day one | Negotiated | No | Usually |
| Cost | Mid | High | Licence, ongoing | Low |
| Continuity risk | Low — documented handover | Low | Low | High — one person |
| Best when | You want it built and owned | Board-level transformation at scale | Your need is standard | Small, well-defined task |
If your need genuinely is standard, buy the product — it will be cheaper and better supported than anything we could build. If your task is small and well defined, hire a good freelancer. We are worth the money when the value sits in your own data and processes and you want to end up owning the result.
Questions
Deliberately small and senior. Every project is run by someone who has shipped production systems, not by a graduate following a template with a partner appearing at the steering committee. We bring in specialists — a data engineer, a compliance advisor, a domain expert in your sector — when a project genuinely needs them, and we tell you who is doing what. If you need a hundred consultants, we are the wrong firm and we will say so.
You should not trust anyone on the basis of size. Judge on three things instead: does the firm hand over the code and accounts so you are never trapped; will they show you a measured before-and-after rather than a claim; and will they tell you when the answer is not to hire them? Ask those three questions of every firm you are speaking to, including us. Our answers are yes, yes, and yes — and the process page puts them in writing.
Yes. We do not publish client names on the website, because most of our work touches finance and customer data and clients prefer discretion. On request we will introduce you to a reference in a comparable sector who can speak candidly about what worked and what did not.
Yes — AI Consultant Kenya is part of Radahost, a Kenyan hosting and infrastructure company. They are separate businesses with separate teams and separate phone lines; what they share is ownership and a decade of operational habits. In practice it means anything we build for you can be hosted, backed up, monitored and supported locally without introducing a third party you have never met.
Systems designed to deceive people about whether they are talking to a machine. Surveillance of employees beyond what is lawful and disclosed. Fully automated decisions that materially affect someone’s livelihood — credit, employment, insurance — without a human accountable for the outcome. And anything that requires us to help you dodge your obligations under the Data Protection Act, 2019.
